🎯 About the Role

The Design Engineer I – Traffic role is an excellent entry point into the field of traffic and transportation engineering. This position places you at the heart of impactful mobility and infrastructure projects, including traffic operations, signal design, roadway safety enhancements, and community-focused traffic planning.

🛠 Key Responsibilities

As a Design Engineer I – Traffic, you will:

• Assist in conducting traffic impact studies, evaluating how new developments influence roadway performance.

• Perform traffic operations studies, including congestion analysis, flow optimization, and delay assessments.

• Support capacity analysis using widely used simulation and evaluation tools.

• Contribute to traffic signal design, including layout, equipment selection, and compliance with engineering standards.

• Participate in signal timing optimization, helping communities reduce delays and improve travel efficiency.

• Assist with signing and pavement marking plans, ensuring safe and clear roadway guidance.

• Aid in preparing traffic control plans, lighting layouts, striping designs, and related civil drawings.

• Prepare technical reports, documentation, and communication material for clients and project stakeholders.

🧠 Required Skills & Experience

To excel in this role, candidates should possess:

Education

• BS or MS in Civil Engineering, preferably with coursework or emphasis in transportation engineering.

• EIT certification required, or ability to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam within 6 months of hire.

Technical Skills

• Knowledge of transportation principles, traffic flow theory, and roadway safety fundamentals.

• Experience with traffic analysis and modeling tools such as:

  • Synchro

  • HCS

  • ArcGIS

  • VISSIM

  • TransCAD
    (Experience with these tools is a strong plus, not mandatory.)
